Impact of the Earthquake (7.7 magnitude) in Mandalay Region, March 28, 2025
Mandalay Archdiocese’s Latest Update: April 5, 2025
On March 28, two strong earthquakes hit central Myanmar, with epicenters located near the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing. Several aftershocks have been recorded since then. Both cities are located in Mandalay Archdiocese. The strongest tremors in the Mandalay region impacted these townships the most: Amarapura, Aungmyaythazan, Chanayethazan, Chanmyathazi, Kyaukse, Madaya, Maha Aungmyay, Ngazun, Myittha, Patheingyi, Pyigyitagong, Pyinoolwin, Singu, Sintgaing, Tada-U, Thazi, and Wundwin.[1] According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 3,000 people have lost their lives, nearly 5,000 have been injured, and over 370 remain missing nationwide.[2]
As of now, the most urgent needs are humanitarian assistance, including food, medicine, temporary shelter, hygiene kits, and dignity kits. In the future, financial assistance will be essential for rebuilding the community.
Under the guidance of Archbishop Marco, the archdiocese of Mandalay has established “Mandalay Catholic Emergency Rescue Team” to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the powerful earthquake.
Contact information of the emergency rescue team are provided here.
